Aesthetica has been performing hair transplant procedures for more than 15 years. Our techniques offer you the most natural and permanent hair loss treatments available today. Hair regrowth in bald areas is facilitated with the transplant of your own healthy hair follicles.
Hair Transplant for Men and Women
The Aesthetica hair transplant procedure involves the movement of your own hair follicles from a healthy part of your scalp to the balding or thinning area being treated. Once in their new location the transplanted follicles grow completely normal hairs – which will look stronger and healthier than surrounding existing hairs. We can treat your baldness and hair loss and achieve hair regrowth naturally.
In the past, the results from a hair transplant could be unnatural looking; as the transplanted grafts looked large and tuft-like. Today, the grafts consist of 1-3 hair follicles and even with close inspection look completely natural. This state of the art technique is called follicular unit transplantation and at Aesthetica this procedure is performed by a Doctor and trained technicians so you can be confident that you will get the best results possible from any hair loss treatment.

Frequently asked Questions
What areas can be treated?
It is able to effectively treat scalp hair loss, facial hair loss (e.g. from beard scarring), eyebrow hair loss, and hair loss in the pubic regions.
Where are the follicles taken from?
Usually, the donor area is located at the back or sides of your head. The donor hair follicles are removed by gentle surgery and there are sutures in place for about a week.
The hair follicles from the donor area have a different genetic code to those in the balding area which they retain even after transplantation. When these follicles are transplanted into an area of baldness, they retain their genetic hair-growing qualities, this is why these follicles tend to produce full-size hairs over a person’s lifetime and do not fall out once planted in the treatment area.
What causes hair loss? The reasons for premature hair loss are many and varied.
For both men and women genetics are a major factor in hair loss, for women it can also be hormonal. Accidents, burns, and disease can also trigger hair loss. Hereditary can cause young people in their 20s begin losing hair.
Myths about hair loss include over shampooing, poor skull circulation, and wearing hats all the time.
How thick can my hair regrowth be after a hair transplant?
As a guide, about 100-200 grafts can be placed in an area about the size of your thumb, depending on how closely they are packed. Each graft consists of 1 – 3 hair follicles depending on the thickness required; grafts closer to your hairline will generally consist of 1 hair follicle whilst grafts further back will consist of more, this is to give your hairline a natural appearance whilst still giving your hair the required density.
Once the original grafted follicles have grown further grafts can be placed into the spaces between the new follicles bringing about further hair density. The latest transplant techniques minimize damage to existing follicles.
How long does hair regrowth take? Many follicles start the regrowth process immediately after your hair transplant.
However some hair follicles may need 3-4 months of rest before they start growing; this delay seems more pronounced after larger treatment sessions. We believe that well over 90% of the hair grafts we place will survive and grow normally in their new position.
Placing hair grafts into scars, or other problem areas may have limited results. But this will be discussed with you about your individual concern.
Optimally, our procedures are combined with special topical medication before and after the grafting used in conjunction with micro-current stimulation – an option unique to Aesthetica. Hair grafts will grow faster and stronger using this method.
What happens during the hair transplant ?
Your hair transplant is a long procedure as your hair strip must be cut into individual follicles or little clusters of 2 or 3 hairs.
Experienced technicians able to achieve this working precisely with microscopes. Your procedure is relatively pain free as you are given local anaesthetic and if necessary a mild sedation.
First the hair grafts are carefully extracted and separated into individual follicles or groups of 2 or 3 hairs, these are called follicular units.
The recipient sites are then prepared with delicate instruments.
The procedure can take between 2 to 6 hours, depending on the number of hair grafts transplanted, and the area and qualities of the recipient area.
After a hair transplant there can be some mild discomfort in the donor or recipient areas, but many patients say they do not even need to take analgesics, although these are provided as part of the post-op treatment.
How will I look and feel after a transplant?Right after the hair loss treatment, your scalp will be red and slightly swollen. There may be some small scabs over the individual hair grafts that will remain for about a week. There are no bandages, and the grafts will take within the first 24-48 hours.
Hair regrowth and the recovery
The new hair grafts need to be protected and gently treated for about 10 days after the hair transplant procedure. The scalp can be gently washed the day after the procedure. All medication and shampoos are provided as part of our care package.
Our Doctors will recommend some professional hair care products and possibly some medication, to help boost follicle growth, and keep the treated area and all of your hair looking its very best.
Most patients find that they can return to work the second day after their transplant. Occasionally there may be some slight bruising or swelling around the forehead that may need several days to resolve.
Sutures in the donor area will need to be removed about 7 – 10 days after the procedure. Mild exercise and gym work can be progressively resumed two days after the procedure, with unrestricted activity allowed after two weeks.
Complications and unexpected outcomesHair transplant procedures are surgical procedures, in rare case, bruising, swelling, infection and bleeding may occur. If this happens, they can almost always be easily resolved without risk to patient or transplanted follicles. Rarely a patient will have unexpected poor healing of the donor and/or recipient areas, in the form of a scar. Smoking and lifestyle can adversely affect follicle yield and hair regrowth.
Female Hair Loss and Female Hair Transplants
Hair transplants, Eyebrow transplants and Hair restoration for women is available at Aesthetica Melbourne.
Women, we are frequently bombarded with the message that our most important contribution to society is our appearance. We know this is not true. But we are aware that how we feel about ourselves is connected to how we feel about our appearance and how others may see us.
The agony of women suffering from hair loss is deeper than that of men with the same problem. This is because much of a woman’s self-image depends on the way she looks in the mirror.
One of the most disheartening things we can experience is to watch our once full healthy hair become thin, or balding, and nearly impossible to style attractively.
Many women often feel too ashamed and embarrassed to seek the help they need from a hair transplant surgeon. They may feel as though somehow the loss of their hair is their fault. A surprising number of women simply don’t realise how widespread the problem of thinning hair is among their female counterparts.
Androgenetic alopecia is the most common cause for hair loss and balding patterns in women.
Unlike men, women most commonly experience hair loss on the top of their scalps, with some loss towards the front. In many cases, rather than lose their hair altogether, women commonly experience significant hair thinning.
Traction alopecia results from the hair being pulled too tightly or styled too vigorously.
Most common in women who wear their hair exclusively or very frequently in tightly pulled braids, pigtails, pony tails or other styling measures will begin to report some loss of hair in later years.
Investigation is necessary to eliminate medical causes of hair loss in females. Hormone imbalance, thyroid problems, iron and zinc deficiencies are rare but can certainly cause hair loss.
Female pattern thinning is a completely different condition to male pattern baldness. It is characterised by gradual thinning with age but almost never proceeds to total baldness. Fortunately the hair at the back of the head is usually spared and can be used for transplantation as in males.
Good surgery is the most permanent and successful treatment for any kind of hair loss. It requires sensible planning and state of the art technique performed by a specialised team.
