One such problem is cellulite. Cellulite has become one of the most talked about female conditions in the recent years and is often described as

"orange peel, cottage cheese skin, mattress phenomenon or dimpled skin."

It is visible on the thighs, buttocks and sometimes lower tummy of otherwise healthy, fit women. Although some men may get it, almost 90-98% of cellulite cases occur in women. There appears to be a hormonal and metabolic component to the presentation of cellulite.

The true causes of cellulite are poorly understood. Genetic factors such as race, biotype, hormone receptors etc can determine sensitivity to distribution of fat cells and where they manifest themselves.

Cellulite forms just below the surface of the skin in the thighs and buttocks region, where areas of fat collect and force themselves against the tissue creating a puckered look to the surface of the skin.

What causes cellulite?

Cellulite is a term used to describe the dimpled appearance of the skin caused by fat deposits just below the skin. The fat deposits are not the primary cause of cellulite. All the muscles of the body are wrapped in a padding of fatty connective tissue. This padding, with its varying thickness, gives the female figure its roundness and soft contour. The round, fatty cells of the padding, bathed in a liquid medium, are held in place by a network of fibers. Constantly circulating through these are nourishing liquids; water, blood and lymphatic fluid. These liquids carry oxygen and nutrients through the tissues and also cleanse them of waste. The free flow of liquids assures this process.

A change occurs when the waste removal process (circulation) is slowed down in prone areas. The connective tissue (the third layer of skin), an area saturated with water and wastes, thickens, hardens, and forms immovable pockets. These pockets bulge and puff up. This is called Cellulite.

Cellulite is created by a combination of the following:

Toxic accumulation, fluid retention, poor circulation, poor lymphatic flow, often lack of excercise, nutrient deficiency and possibly a toxic colon.

Cellulite is a circulation and edema (water retention) problem rather than an overweight problem. A person can be thin and have cellulite. Cellulite does not respond to methods such as diet and exercise like fat does. Exercise locks in cellulite and tightens it, which is why cellulite remains when one does aerobics or other excercise.

What happens during this treatment?

The Thermage procedure employs a patented capacitive radiofrequency (CRF) technology called ThermaCool. ThermaCool uses a sophisticated treatment tip which delivers a controlled amount of CRF energy. With each touch to the skin, the ThermaTip device uniformly heats a large volume of collagen in the deeper layers of the skin and its underlying tissue while simultaneously protecting the outer layer of the skin with cooling.

This deep uniform heating action causes deep structures in your skin to disrupt the mechanisms that have created cellulite and immediately tighten your skin.

What will I feel like after this treatment?

How long before I see the results of this treatment?

Recently published studies conducted by Thermage show that measurable tightening improvements appear gradually over 2 to 6 months after a single treatment session. However, many patients have reported seeing an earlier response.

Is Thermage safe?

The Thermage procedure has an excellent safety record. With over 500,000 estimated worldwide patient treatments to date the reported incidence of side effects is less than 0.4%. The most frequently reported incidents are classified as swelling, redness, bumps and blisters on or around the treated area. These side effects have disappeared in a few days or weeks. A rare (<0.11%) but longer lasting side effect described as a surface irregularity has also been reported.
