What is Eyebrow Hair Transplantation?
Eyebrow transplant is the movement of one’s own hair follicles from one area to another area where it is required. Hair transplants cannot be donated by another person, as they would be rejected by the body’s immune system.
Once in their new location, the follicles grow completely normal hairs – which often look stronger and healthier than surrounding existing hairs.
Where are the hair follicles taken from?
The hair follicles are taken from a small strip of hair from the back of your head. Over time this scar will be invisible
How long does it take?
Eyebrow transplant in Armadale, Melbourne is an exacting procedure, involving a team of nurses/technicians and the Doctor. The donor follicle tissue must be carefully separated into individual follicles.
There are many ways of placing grafts into recipient sites. The most common system today is the doctor making all the sites first and then the single grafts are placed by the doctor or the technician. The doctor is in control of variations of density and direction as well as distribution.
The procedure can take between 2 to 3 hours, depending on the number of grafts transplanted.
How many grafts can be transplanted in one session?
The procedure can vary from 100 to 200 or more grafts, depending on the area available, some cases may only need 50 grafts to obtain a better density, other cases may not have any existing eyebrows, in which case there will be more grafts needed.
Is it painful?
The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic, combined with mild sedation and is virtually pain-free. Afterwards, there may be some mild discomfort in the donor or recipient areas, but many patients do not even need to take analgesics.
What will I look like after the treatment?
Right after the treatment, the area will be red and slightly swollen. There may be some small scabs over the individual grafts that will remain for about a week. There are no bandages.
How long does it take for the new eyebrows to grow?
With our latest techniques, which result in minimal handling and trauma to the follicles during the procedure, most of our patients report that many follicles start growing hair straight after the procedure. Generally, over 90% of the grafts placed will survive and grow normally in their new position.
Grafts placed into scar tissue, or other problem areas may have a lower yield.
How soon can I return to work?
Most patients find that they can return to work 3-5 days after an eyebrow transplant.
Occasionally there may be some slight bruising or swelling around the area that may need several days to resolve. Sutures in the donor area will need to be removed 7 – 10 days after the procedure. Mild exercise and gym work can be progressively resumed 2 days after the procedure, with unrestricted activity recommended after two weeks.
Do I need any special care after this procedure?
The new grafts need to be protected and gently treated for about 10 days after the procedure. The area can be gently washed the day after the procedure.
Complications and unexpected outcomes
Transplant procedures are surgical and some bruising, swelling, infection and bleeding are possible, but it is uncommon.
If they occur, they can generally be easily handled, without risk to patient or transplanted follicles.
