Gynaecomastia and male breast reduction procedures

Determining the symptoms will determine the preferred treatment option for you.

  •  Fatty tissue – which is soft.
  •  Glandular tissue – which is firm and dense

Once determined, either liposuction, or excision will be the preferred option.

When your gynaecomastia is predominantly fatty tissue, then liposuction is the preferred option.
In this procedure, very small incisions are made, through which a cannula is inserted, local anaesthetic is infused and then the fat is sucked out. This is usually performed using local anaesthetic with sedation, however, if can be done with a general anaesthetic.

Male breast enlargement caused by excess glandular tissue or excess skin will need to be excised. This male breast reduction procedure will leave a scar, typically around the edge of the nipple.

 How long does the gynaecomastia procedure take?

Male breast reduction procedure will take about 1 to 1 1/2 hours. It is usually performed with local anaesthetic and sedation to ensure patient comfort.

How will I feel afterwards?

After your male breast reduction procedure you maybe a little sore and swollen. You are able to return to work within 3-5 days.
More strenuous activity after about 2-3 weeks.
Full recovery about 4 – 6 weeks

When will I see results from gynaecomastia?

You will start to see results from your gynaecomastia procedure after a week.
Full results could take 6 months before the swelling completely goes down.

When can I return to work?

Everyone is individual, however, depending on the type of work you do, you can usually return to work after about 2-3 days if it is not too strenuous.
